Eddy Grant, up yours

In an allegation arriving a little late to the party, Eddy Grant (Electric Avenue) is claiming that Stylo by Gorillaz is infringing on his copyright on the 1983 song, "Time Warp."According to this article by NME, Grant believes not only that the song is infringing, but that Damon Albarn, the creator of the Gorillaz, knew of the conflict. He points to the keyboard section of both songs:

Truly, it sounds similar. But influence is not the same as sampling. Any joker with a laptop can make a beat, and there's only so many patterns and rhythms. Further damaging his case is his inane statement to NME,

"Damon Albarn knows in his heart of hearts – it's unfortunate that we cant get into people's hearts – he knows that this is a song that he's loved, in his club days…I don't know the guy…but he knows this is a song he loves"

This is just absurd dribble. He's frantically trying to cling to his claim without giving any real arguments. This is the equivalent of a lawyer saying in the opening statement, "He knows he committed murder. We haven't heard any arguments, but he knows he did it."

NME goes on to say that Grant had never met Albarn, nor knew he was behind the Gorillaz until recently. Even worse. Grant has never met him, let alone have knowledge of Damon's influences, and therefore cannot make an accurate and strong statement of plagiarism.

Get the hell out of here.
